If you are looking for a great value gym in Bangkok, check out our friend’s recommendation and go to the Thai-Japan Bangkok Youth Center (also known as Thai-Japan Stadium) in Dindaeng, and located on Mitmaitri Rd., Dindaeng sub-district, Dindaeng district, Bangkok, covering an area of approximately 73 Rai. A Year long membership is just $40 baht (about $1.20 USD) The Thai Japan Bangkok Youth Center is managed by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and is a gift from the Japanese Government for the Rattanakosin Bicentennial. The King Rama IX opened the youth center on April 3, 1982.
The description says In the youth center there are a 3-story main building which consists gymnasium, exhibition hall, occupational training room, library, indoor fitness, meeting rooms, dining room and offices. There are also a standard outdoor stadium with 8,000 seats and running track, a stage for outdoor activities with 200-seat capacity, a cinema room with a stage. Moreover, all sport equipment and facilities are provided. All activities and facilities are available for youth membership and other people as its intention is to give Thai children an opportunity to join the cultural and sport activities and to strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Japan.
Her eis our take on the Thai-Japan Bangkok Youth Center, which is open on Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The gym is a tad old school, but it’s big and has everything you need. They have a full size boxing/MMA ring. Lots of bags, lots of space to skip, run, jump and whatever else you like doing. They have two floors of equipment; the first proper 80’s bodybuilder style; solid plate weights and machines for every part of the body, and then an upstairs which is more leisure-centre like. There’s a nice ab section upstairs too.
It doesn’t stop there, either. They have…
- A full size running track (stadium)
- A full size football pitch with beautiful grass
- An Olympic -sized swimming pool (you need a health certificate from the doctor to use this. Very clean.)
- Squash courts
- Outdoor park-style gym
- Onsite shop (x2)
ALL FOR 40 BAHT A YEAR!
Why So Cheap?
This place isn’t in it for the cash, obviously. Apparently, the Thai-Japan youth centre is an initiative between Thailand and Japan to provide training facilities for one and all; anyone living in Thailand, rich or poor. From taxi drivers to executives, it’s open to all. Of course a number of sporting and social events are held here too.
Our friend likes to workout, and if this place was just a crummy little gym he wouldn’t have joined just because it was cheap. He’d prefer to pay 2,000 Baht a month and have access to a proper gym with all the weights and things needed. But honestly, this is certainly the best gym in Bangkok when you consider the overall amenities. The grounds also provide a lovely place to chill out.
