With two trips completed to Dublin, it was time to go to more exotic locales on my mileage runs on my journey to 1K status with United airlines. I am doing well so far on my mileage runs, having accumulated 27,800 EQMs on my
2 Dublin trips and a total of 31,500 Miles (given the 50% United Mileage Plus Gold bonus). But, it is time for mileage run number 3, a Thursday to Monday run to Istanbul, home of so much history. And I get to take one of my sons, who is eleven so I am excited to show him this incredible land in person. The great fares for this trip originated from Chicago O’Hare (ORD). This time I took a partner in crime, Ben my 11-year old adventurer son, as we ventured to Istanbul. My wife and I have been here several times and we have friends in Turkey but I was excited to introduce this interesting culture to my second son. Our routing took us by way of Zurich then on to to Istanbul on the way out and Istanbul to Germany on the way back.
Unfortunately for us, the overnight leg from Washington DC to Zurich was on an old plane with archaic video technology. Luckily, we had downloaded four movies to our iPad mini. Upon arriving in Switzerland, we learned that our connecting plane had hit some birds so our one
hour layover became 4 hours, but we were able to turn that into a positive utilizing the excellent SwissAir lounge that is open to United Mileage Plus Gold members and above. With modern design, great food and an open bar, along with wireless internet and eight internet computers available for use, this was a very comfortable place to kill some time.
