ABOUT THE FREE MILES TRAVELER – Steve Lavey, a 25 year Chicago citizen and frequent flyer who now lives in Denver but commutes to Chicago, started this blog to show others that it is possible to find lots of ways to use the tech tools out there to find really great cheap airfares, use some travel tricks, pass on all our tips, accumulate miles and to be able to travel the world on the cheap using these low fares and free miles. With a background as a Chief Financial Officer with a number of successful public companies and start-ups, this serial entrepreneur is always digging into the details to ensure each deal, tip or trick is a good deal with no hidden catches. The goal of this site is to give you all the tips, tricks, and techniques that he has learned to save you time and money so you can maximize your travel dollars.
A number of years ago, before the kids and the mortgage, Sue and Steve took off on a one year “Round the World”, visiting 25 countries and countless cool cities and towns. They felt like traveling enriched their lives in a way that they could not find at home. They truly love to travel because culture fascinates us and they love the differences, the customs, the traditions, the craziness, the annoyances, the conveniences, festivals, the little things of daily life. It is so fascinating to us! Steve says “Simply to be in that culture and experiencing it on daily terms is our favorite thing about travel, and because of this main reason, we keep coming back for more and more. We travel to open our hearts and eyes and learn more about the world than our newspapers will accommodate.
We travel to bring what little we can, in our ignorance and knowledge, to those parts of the globe whose riches are differently dispersed. And we travel, in essence, to become young fools again — to slow time down and get taken in, and fall in love once more. The beauty of this whole process was best described, perhaps, before people even took to frequent flying, by George Santayana in his lapidary essay, “The Philosophy of Travel.” We “need sometimes,” the Harvard philosopher wrote, “to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what.” People keep asking us how we could afford a travel lifestyle for so long, or how we perks enjoy quality flights and hotels as we travel with our four kids. We paid for the entire RTW trip ourselves, starting with a plan to save money and a plan to find excellent airfares, and accumulate miles and award miles. You don’t need to be rich to travel the world. Several years ago, we realized that finding great airfares, and earning points and miles for award travel is probably the most effective way to spend our time in the pursuit of travel. While the tricks and tips we learn and share are the subject of countless blog posts and discussion forums, we will try to guide you on your first step into to a larger world.”
